Sabic, a global leader in the chemical industry, will present its portfolio of Sabic Purecares and Trucircle materials for the healthcare and hygiene market at Index23 from April 18 to 21 in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme of ‘Collaborating for sustainability and innovative solutions’.

Abdullah Al-Otaibi, General Manager, ETP & Market Solutions at Sabic says; “The hygiene industry is a very demanding market for fabrics and films providing technical performance, wearability and efficient manufacturability for soft, loft, pure and moisture absorbing applications in personal care.” He added: “As brand owners and suppliers are constantly seeking advanced material solutions to help them push the limits of safety and convenience, function, sustainability and cost control, we welcome the opportunity of the Index show to highlight our innovative material technology designed to drive performance, enhance sustainability and optimize consumer comfort in this dynamic business environment.”

At Index, Sabic will highlight a joint project with two market leaders, using certified circular polymers from the Trucircle portfolio in recyclable films for feminine hygiene, baby care and disposable medical applications. In all of these cases from diapers to surgical drapes and medical gowns, the sustainable materials can serve as direct drop-in alternatives with no compromise in production efficiency and product performance.

Further examples on display at the company’s booth will feature Trucircle solutions for facemasks, including an N95 design that localizes the value chain with Sabic Purecares PP spunbond and meltblown polymers in Saudi Arabia. Sabic provides complete solutions for facemask production as part of its localization strategy and has been a key enabler of the Saudi Made initiative. Also shown will be a closed-loop facemask developed in collaboration with industrial and research partners in Europe

“Industrial partnerships through the value chain with brand owners, converters and institutes are instrumental in implementing technically and economically feasible solutions to close the loop on materials. Such collaborations will accelerate the industry’s journey towards circularity with high added value for safe and functional hygiene applications,” adds Hans Pierik, Global Hygiene and Healthcare Leader at Sabic.

Index is the largest global venue of the nonwovens market. As the name implies, Sabic’s Purecares solutions for nonwovens and hygiene films combine high purity and care – two of the most important considerations when it comes to personal hygiene products. Importantly, Sabic Purecares polyolefin products are based on technologies free of both tris (nonylphenyl) phosphite (TNPP) and phthalates. Consumer comfort is achieved by using Sabic polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) polymers for bi-component fibers to answer multiple needs for soft and loft handfeel nonwovens, enabling easy lamination to other building blocks on medical nonwovens or absorbent hygiene applications.

In addition, the company produces Trucircle certified circular polymers for Sabic Purecares PP and PE portfolio with feedstock based on advanced recycling of mixed and used plastic that would otherwise typically not be suitable for mechanical recycling processes. These more sustainable solutions can be adopted in downstream processes as direct drop-in alternatives to incumbent materials with no compromise in production efficiency, purity and product performance. Moreover, they meet with global megatrends to extend the circular plastics economy also to the market of personal hygiene products and increase efficiency by creating value from used materials that would otherwise end up as waste in landfill sites or incineration plants.

Read more about Sabic’s hygiene and healthcare industry solutions presented at recent exhibitions and visit Sabic at Booth 1140 during Index to learn more about these and other hygiene and healthcare solutions. With their expertise, the Sabic team will be delighted to discuss your specific needs in this rapidly growing global market. A broad portfolio

Milliken specializes in optimizing the performance of polypropylene (PP) and recycled polypropylene (rPP), helping to make durable, lightweight resins a viable alternative to other, less-sustainable materials.

PureCycle’s PureFive HPP15S ultra-pure recycled resin.
  • DeltaMax performance modifiers and DeltaFlow viscosity modifiers improve key aspects of PP impact copolymers and recycled PP. DeltaMax enhances the physical and flow properties of rPP, thereby enabling the use of more recycled content while also allowing converters to save energy. DeltaFlow, meanwhile, helps recyclers increase the melt flow rate of pre- and post-consumer rPP, thereby reducing energy use and advancing circularity.
  • Hyperform HPN additives help maximize the stiffness of pre- and post-consumer rPP without sacrificing impact. At the same time, Hyperform HPN additives help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production, enabling users to display the much-desired UL eco-label on thin-wall injection molded products.
  • Millad NX 8000 ECO clarifying agent helps produce the durable, fully transparent, highly recyclable material known as NX UltraClear PP. Injection molders using the material can save both energy and money due to lower processing temperatures and faster cycle times than resin formulated using traditional clarifiers. This, in turn, boosts productivity and reduces carbon emissions, helping converters lower their overall carbon footprint while displaying the UL eco-label on their finished parts.
Millad NX 8000 ECO clarifying agent for polypropylene.

Milliken’s portfolio extends beyond polypropylene innovations. For example, UltraGuard Solutions increase barrier properties in polyethylene (PE), allowing converters to downgauge and enabling the use of more recyclable, mono-material PE package constructions.

Covestro Shows the Wonder of Materials Research in the ‘Wonder Matter(s)’ Exhibition

Covestro Shows the Wonder of Materials Research in the ‘Wonder Matter(s)’ Exhibition

The company presents three special installations based on the inherent properties of plastics

Making the impossible possible, creating a forest in the heart of Milan, housing an unforgettable memory: these and many other wonders will be staged by Covestro, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of polymer materials and raw materials used in them, during the Wonder Matter(s) exhibition as part of Milan Design Week 2023.

The exhibition will be hosted at Superstudio Più by Materially, a consultancy firm that helps companies develop and spread innovation and sustainability based on materials. Wonder Matter(s) aims to explore wonder through a sensory, exploratory and narrative journey, while deepening the qualities of materials with competence, rationality and concreteness.

The Impossible

In the playground designed by Materially, the centerpiece of Wonder Matter(s), Covestro will present “The Impossible” installation dedicated to Arfinio. This revolutionary material is the result of a new technology that combines high-performance liquid polymers and unique minerals with reaction-based injection molding. It is a lightweight and durable solid surface material that allows complex projects to be completed easily and quickly in a single operation, and can be easily repaired and recycled.

Arfinio combines the advantages of aliphatic polyurethane chemistry with those of reaction injection molding and solid surfaces: a combination that was considered unfeasible for decades, but is now a reality thanks to Covestro and its partner Arcesso Dynamics, resulting in Wonder Matter(s). The exhibition shows in practical terms what it means today to invent and give shape to something that did not exist before: The Impossible.

Unexpected Green Forest

Unexpected Green Forest is the name of Covestro’s exhibition dedicated to the unique polycarbonates manufactured with renewable raw materials. This material surprisingly creates a real forest within Wonder Matter(S) in which the plastic proves to be circular, recyclable and durable. It is Makrolon RE, a renewable polycarbonate made with raw materials derived from organic waste rather than fossil fuels. Thanks to this origin and its inherent properties, the plastic supports sustainability goals and offers enormous creative possibilities in terms of color, shape and decoration, allowing the creation of monomaterial or modular, reusable and long-lasting objects and projects.

A Selfie Garden

Selfie Garden, the playful installation by Covestro and its thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), offers a memorable backdrop for a souvenir photo. TPU from Covestro has a broad performance spectrum, which includes a high level of flexibility over а wide array of temperatures. It also covers an extensive structural range, from hard and rigid, to soft and elastic, making it an excellent material for single-material design. Its high degree of adaptability and multiple application opportunities are the inspiration for this imaginary garden – ideal for framing a lasting memory at Milan Design Week.

Packaging Giant Yash Pakka Firms Expansion in America, Enters Guatemala to Build the World’s Largest Compostable Flexible Packaging and Moulded Fibre Facility

The company has signed MoU with sugar companies in Guatemala for raw material to kickstart the development of the 400 TPD facility.

Yash Pakka Limited (YPL), a pioneer in the compostable packaging industry, has kickstarted the development of its first overseas plant in the Central American country Guatemala. The new plant is expected to be the world’s largest compostable flexible packaging and moulded fibre facility. As the first big step in this direction, Pakka has signed MoU with the country’s major sugar companies to procure sugarcane residue, also known as bagasse, which is the primary raw material used by the company for its products.

Pakka explored various geographies, including Mexico, Belize, Colombia, Brazil and Peru, among others, to set up their first factory outside India. The primary market that they are willing to cater to is North America. The company chose Guatemala due to the widespread availability of sugarcane in the country, as well as the positive response they received from Guatemala authorities and sugar companies. The upcoming plant is expected to be operational by mid-2025 with a production capacity of 400 tonnes per day.

In its bid to find alternatives for single-use plastic, Pakka has been developing compostable packaging solutions for more than 4 decades. For Pakka, pioneers in the packaging space, compostable flexible packaging seems like the natural progression as it is expected to have a big impact on the industry that is moving towards sustainability. Development of flexible packaging has been in the works, and rigorous R&D has been conducted over the last couple of years by the company’s innovations team. The company has also been offering compostable moulded fibre products for food service in India through its brand Chuk. The new plant at Guatemala will produce flexible packaging and moulded fibre products as its primary offerings. While these will be the focus, information about other products that will be manufactured in the Guatemala plant will be shared in due course of time.

Pakka’s work has been towards developing alternate solutions for single-use plastic, which is aligned with the company’s vision of a cleaner planet. This is a step in that direction, and is expected to have a widespread impact.

Ved Krishna, Strategy Lead, Yash Pakka Ltd., said, “We are delighted to partner with the Guatemalan sugar industry to start the process of setting up the world’s largest compostable packaging and moulded fibre facility. The idea is to work towards developing better bio-materials for food packaging and service”
